They’ve only played six gigs, the latest at the Green Man festival, they've only known each other for a few months and the bass player only bought a guitar six weeks ago. But Hullabaloo are certainly making an uproar and a disturbance with a soon to be released EP and a major gig in London. The seven members, Benji, Troy, Becky, Luke, Tom, Craig and Laurence met at Cardiff University where they are doing various degrees, from music and journalism to English and law.
When drummer Craig put an advert up at college Brighton born Benji got in touch, being a singer and guitar player. Troy, from Malvern, admitted to being able to play bass and joined along with keyboard player Luke. Tom, also from Malvern, came in with a second guitar. Before long they were rehearsed and ready to gig. The University Battle of the Bands was their first outing having just recruited Becky to add some sax appeal. The gig went well with Hullabaloo coming a close second, greatly impressing the large student crowd. One of those crowd members approached the band afterwards offering his talents on the fiddle. And then there were seven. Benji had gained some notoriety around the campus for his appearance in the Channel 4 show The Joy of Teenage Sex where he had explained the benefits of fellatio to any who would listen. The second gig was in a small Cardiff pub which barely had room for the band and could hardly contain the clamourously appreciative audience. In musical style, Hullabaloo are a pleasant change from the ubiquitous guitar, bass and drums line up. With the sax, keyboard and fiddle they give texture and depth to their inventive, dancey tracks. With echoes of ska, motown and disco, they manage to add a distinctive indie rawness to their music that puts one in mind of the fabulous Rip, Rig and Panic with a touch of Tackhead thrown in for good measure.
